Movie information:

Madame Web is a 2024 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is produced by Columbia Pictures and Di Bonaventura Pictures in association with Marvel and TSG Entertainment, and distributed by Sony Pictures. It is the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Directed by S. J. Clarkson, who was also co-writer on the script alongside Claire Parker, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. It stars Dakota Johnson in the titular role, with a supporting cast featuring Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.

Story:

Cassandra “Cassie” Webb is a paramedic who is orphaned after her mother dies during childbirth. An accident on the job awakens her time-related powers after, giving her the power to alter time thanks to the premonition granted by her Deja Vu like abilities. When a chance encounter with 3 girls leads to a vision revealing their death at the hands of a super-powered assailant, she decides to intervene. This man, incidentally connected to her mother’s research in Peru, sparks her own curiosity into the circumstances of her mother’s death. The story unfolds as she literally races against time and fate to protect the 3 girls while also trying to uncover the truth regarding her mother’s death which in turn also holds the answers to the origin of her own superpowers.

Movie Review:

In times when the audience is “Superhero Fatigued”, Madame Web looks to be a low effort cash grab from Marvel studios who think a spiderman character link (some sparsely scattered references meant to be fan bait) and a few recognizable actors is enough to make a good movie.

It has all the typical elements of a screenplay but the movie lacks any passion or energy.

The antagonist is never fleshed out. The dialogues as well as the screenplay itself is akin to something an AI would write.

The dialogues are passable at best and cringey at worst. Character reactions are out of place and the main characters are just the outlines of what they’re supposed to be.

The emotional dialogues don’t hit as there is no emotional build up for it at all.

The visuals are competent but this is the least to be from a production as huge as Marvel Studios.

The movie is like a knock off, fan film of the Spiderman character.

Verdict:

Someone has pointed a gun at Sony and made them make this film against their will. Only then can the laughably low effort put into this story can be explained.
