How did you get interest in music?

In my childhood I stayed with my uncles who were musicians in Tanuku village. I got interest in music as I am inspired by them.

Did you underwent any formal training in music?

I learned music on my own , I did not undergo any training. For my studies we shifted to Kakinada from Tanuku. A popular orchestra named ‘Gangadadram Party’ is there in Tanuku. I used to watch them during programmes and i had a  chance to see different instruments. I learned playing accordion, then I learned harmony.  In those days I had  pen friends in USA with their help I learnt to play guitar. In course of time i developed musical skills on my won.

How did you enter film industry?

In 1981 I went to Chennai to take a course for CA. There unexpectedly I met my friend Dr. Diwakar, he is a drama artist too. He asked me to compose music  for a drama they are playing , Popular singer S P Balasubramanyam was also present in that drama , so I met him there and he offered me to join his team if I am interested.

With whom you have worked initially?

I have worked with music director S A Rajkumar for ten years for different movies.

What is your first movie as music director?

Mayadari Kutumbam is my first movie as music director , it was released in 1990.

When have you started writing lyrics?

When I was working with S A Rajkumar i composed nearly 70 songs as many Tamil movies were dubbed or remade into Telugu I used to write dummy lyrics for the dubbed or remake versions and most of them were selected for the movies. Even I have written lyrics for 20 to 24 songs for a radio programme named ‘Yuva’.

What was the turning point in your career?

Working as music director for ‘Gamyam’ movie is the turning point in my career. The music of this movie was a big hit.

How  you got chance to work in ‘Gamyam’ movie?

Seetharamasastry has written lyrics for this movie , he suggested director Krish my name and got a chance to work in this movie.

Till now in how many movies you have worked ?

I have written lyrics for a song in ‘Krishnam Vande Jagathgurum’ movie and a song in ‘Vedam’ movie. Krish used to give me a chance in some way or other in all his movies after ‘Gamyam’.

Tell us about your upcoming movie ‘Dagudumotha Dandakor ?

I have written lyrics for all the four songs in the movie and composed music.

Is there any similarity between music of the Tamil and Telugu versions?

No, the music in the Telugu version is entirely different and new.

How you  start composing, generally after listening to the story ?

Generally director will explain the situations in which songs are needed and we will write and compose music accordingly. In this movie also they have explained the situations and I composed all the four songs stage by stage.

How much time you have taken to compose music for this movie?

Song of this movie were completed in one month, then after the completion of the movie Re-Recording work started.

For a song how many instruments will be used?

Usually 20 to 25 tracks will be used, In rhythm section we will have different instruments. We can even use 40 to 45 tracks but when number tracks increase balancing will become difficult and all the sounds of different instruments cannot be clearly listened. It will be difficult for the sound engineer to balance, everyone will complete between 20 to 30 tracks for this reason.

Do we have sufficient number of instrumental artists in Hyderabad?

We have limited artists available in Hyderabad for more number of artists we have to go to Chennai, Kerala and Mumbai. The instrumental players in these places are dedicated and it will be easy to work with them.

Which software do you use while composing music?

For recording we use a software called ‘Logic’, we have many types of software’s , we have to load the instrumental music which we want in that software and use it then.

Tell us about the songs which you like the most?

‘Samayama Chalinchake’ song in Gayam movie ‘Yevaru Nerparu Koyilaki’ song in Dagudumotha Dandakore movie.
