One of the most anticipated movies of the year, Kalki 2898 AD is an Indian dystopian sci-fi movie, directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by C. Ashwini Dutt under Vyjayanthi Movies. It is the first installment of the planned Kalki Cinematic Universe and inspired by Hindu scriptures.

In the dystopian time of 2898 AD, Kashi is the last city standing, ruled by the Complex and its supreme leader, Yaskin. Shambala is the only region fighting against this Complex, which has sucked in all the natural resources and made life hell for the rest of the people on earth. Yaskin is taking all the fertile women he finds to carry a baby with a special serum for 150 days. When one of his workers, SUM80, succeeds and when the serum is finally within reach, SUM80 escapes the complex. Aswatthama who is alive since Kurukshetra, realizes this baby in SUM80 is the 10th Avatar of Lord Vishnu. He finds SUM80 to protect her and the baby. Bhairava, a bounty hunter who wishes to live in the Complex, is now on the hunt for SUM80 and claim her bounty.

This movie is, without a doubt, the best sci-fi fantasy movie to be made by the telugu industry. The way to connect and build on the Hindu mythology has been done beautifully. The action scenes, especially the ones with both Amitabh Bachchan and Prabhas, are done excellently. The world building is fantastically done with a mixture of all the hype movements and meta dialogues we enjoy in our telugu mass movies.

The CGI is the best we’ve seen till now in tollywood and the lead character, who is an anti-hero, is refreshing to watch.

While the first half before the interval felt dragged, the movie pays off very well in the second half.

The music is not anything to complain or boast about. Some portions seem very abrupt and roughly edited in.

The editing also is abrupt in some parts.

The dialogue delivery also gets a little funny at some points but not bad enough to completely derail the movie experience.

Definitely go watch Kalki 2898 AD in the theaters which is probably the best spectacle from telugu cinema this year, especially if you are a sci-fi fan desperate for something in this genre from indian cinema.
